Default What's the ETM and ETS latest?

Got into a conversation the other day about Volvo ETMs, and had to admit I didn't know much about the ETM issue, never having owned an affected car. And yet there are plenty of late nineties and early noughties cars around, so presumably there must be solutions to the failing ETM problem.

I found on EBay loads of aftermarket TPS units, solid state, which the sellers claim are simple to fit and don't need to be programmed to the car. These sell for around £75.

Beyond this I found plenty of older articles which variously described replacement of the whole ETM with yellow stickered ones, the fitting of second-hand ones with the same part number as the original, expensive but bullet-proof replacements from a US company (beginning with X?), clever chaps here who fix broken ETM units for very modest amounts, etc, etc, etc.

So, just what is the current thinking on this one?

Is a car with an illuminated ETS light and no other issues a second-hand easy-to-fix bargain, or is it a doom-laden money pit?

Cheers

Jack
