The D3 is the pick of the bunch I think.... nice noise, nice and torquey engine, easy to drive, but will still do 55 + mpg if driven gently on the motorway, and low tax bracket.
I know the D2 (4 pot) is more economical but if you enjoy driving - the D3 is substantially better ergonomically.
Oh yeah - and ultra reliable.
The D2 is sometimes criticised but it is one of the most commonly used engines across a number of manufacturers and usually bought by people for economy reasons so the most likely model not to be maintained well.
