Is there not a company down your way Auto Trans that repair and recondition all ages of boxes??
I would ask the specialist for a bit of advice. They will have dealt with everything at some point
Very often we have had cars that our workshops have condemned the gearboxes yet when they get dropped off at our local super hero "Charles Butler" they are as good as new in no time and at a fraction of the cost of even second hand replacement
