Hi guys

Sorry I left you all hanging - I am pleased to report that I have got my car back today after 22 days, complete with a whole new engine fresh from Sweden.

I am content that, despite previous comments and an earlier recall (not affecting my car) concerning the auxillary belt, that the root cause of the problem was a slowly dying water pump which was "silently" cooking the whole engine. Both Volvo and the AA confirmed that the auxillary belt remained in the correct position even once the cam belt had come off. It seems that the cam belt coming off was as much a symptom as the cause of the total engine destruction.

Volvo have provided a very decent discount to the extent that I paid something similar to the cheapest option I could find for a refurbished engine of unknown origin to be fitted elsewhere, but with the reassurance of this being new and fitted by Volvo.

I would obviously have preferred this not to have happened but hats off to Volvo for coming to a figure we could all live with.
