If I could DIY one cheaply using an existing engine and a suitable s/h alternator then great, but that size generator are expensive to buy, especially for only occasional use!

I agree - once you go above about 5 KVa the price of generators seems to shoot up. But a purpose built generator would hold its value well for 5-10 years (might even increase once we stop using coal....) if you sink a decent sum of money into a perfectly good but none standard home build, you might struggle to get that investment back when you sell it.
Just a thought... if you can split your loading it might be worth buying multiple, smaller units.
