Generally I think this is considered to be caused by the alternator freewheel pulley beginning to fail. This has the potential to snap the aux belt and then derail the timing belt which can result in a rather big bill. The alternator freewheel pulley can be changed on it's own you don't have to change the alternator. I suggest you get it checked out soon rather than later.
