Default XC60 (MY2012) tapping noise on acceleration (intermittent)

I've an XC60 (2012) AWD D5 2.3L with an intermittent problem of a loud tapping/knocking type noise from the engine bay when accelerating above 70Kph....which then leads to vibrations in the steering wheel. If I come off that accelerator noise stops. The frequency of the tapping matches the level of acceleration.

1. Very hard to replicate...have driven 300Km with no problems and even if it does start in a long journey tends to disappear. Nothing for days then back it comes...

2. Had it in to Volvo a couple of times...they replaced #1 Fuel Injector and reset the CPU and convinced me this would sort it but problem came back

3. Got the head Volvo mechanic at the garage to drive it for 20mins with me this week and nothing but by sheer "luck" it started the tapping noise as we we coming back in...only proved to him I wasn't going crazy! He seemed baffled!!

4. A secondary problem is the creaking when turning => need to replace CVs or the drive shafts...awaiting to be done....hard to think this would be the cause

Other than that...when no banging/tapping/knocking it drives really smoothly and when it's at idle.

Any ideas what this might be?
