Default paint costs

I can see that metallic is always going to cost more than "solid" paint but is it really THAT much more expensive. And what's with "inscription" paint? What's in it to cost almost double "ordinary" metallic. Or is it all a way just to extract more £ from our pockets.

Why do some companies NOT charge extra ?

Thoughts??

Think its Citroen (and probably others) who charge the same for paint options on a C1 and a Relay van, despite the van needing a hek of a lot more paint because of its size!!

It seems to be a cash making exercise!

I have always found the Inscription paint to have bigger flake "pop" than the metallic paint. It is noticeable ignoring the S80 that a lot of Volvo's tend to increase with the size from about 525 - 850.

Commercial vehicles tend to have thinner paint to start with.

My MX-5 is solid paint metallic is sometimes a bit nicer.

I agree. It is very annoying, especially when the usual options are white and possibly one other solid colour at best. I went for solid red on my current Volvo as the leasing company wanted £20 a month for metallic and I could not justify that. Considering the rules of economies of scale I would have thought the costs of metallic should not be that much greater.

Hi Harvey

Its not aboout paint although look at prices of differeing states of tune of some Volvos

The V60 T4 180 bhp (no longer available I think) is about £7k more expensive than the T3 150 bhp despite being the same engine, just being 30bhp more.

Same ''oddness'' with V40 with the T2 T3 and T4 versions

The T3 V40 150 bhp is £2k more expensive than the T2 120 bhp (reasonable increase I suppose) although the T4 180bhp is a whopping £6k more expensive than the T3 150. Again no difference in specs, with all having the same engine..!!!

Expensive chips!! Whats it all about?

Regards

I suppose it's all called marketing..

Also if they throw in the metallic paint you then think you are getting money off the product whereas it is costing the Company Sweet FA to give away.

As for the power increases. MAybe some of that cost is to cover lower reliability and therefore more warranty claims - also if the punter will pay for it then charge for it.

Take the XC60 D4 AWD v D5. £2300 extra - and I'm sure the D4 could be remapped to D5 levels for a lot lot less.

At least for the extra money the XC60 D5 not only has more power, +52, but also an extra turbo,so I would say that is reasonable.

Your point is valid though. An S/V60 T3 can be Polestar chipped from 150 to 180 for around £700, which maybe is what the T4 direct from Volvo is.

Hi Crockers

That's why I've changed from a D5 to a D4 AWD.
It's €2600 extra over here for the D5, as opposed to €800 to be chipped.
Anyway I give it a few weeks before I decide if I need it.

I thought I read somewhere that the D4 AWD was a twin-turbo but I can't swear to that.?

And lay off the Incription paint, I'm paying €1300 for "privilege" so I feel bad enough.!!

No, the D4 is only a single turbo hence the lower power bands.

XC60 D5 AWD (215 hp) & XC60 D4 AWD (163hp

All-aluminium high performance 2.4 litre five-cylinder turbo diesel engines
Superior fuel economy
Quick and comfortable response
Sequential twin turbochargers for immense power across the rev range
Start/Stop technology (manual)
Max torque 420 Nm (D4 AWD and D5 AWD manual) or 440 Nm (D5 AWD Geartronic)
D5 AWD: six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic with sport mode. D4 AWD: Six-speed Geartronic automatic

1) The XC60 D4 FWD is a 2.0 litre single turbo 5cyl 163bhp

2) The XC60 D4 AWD is a 2.4 litre twin turbo 5cyl 163bhp (detuned D5) with more
torque than the 2.0 litre D4 FWD - probably due to the AWD?

3) The XC60 D5 AWD is 2.4 litre twin turbo 5cyl 215bhp

I knew I saw this somewhere before, so apparently I'm still gonna have my second turbo come July.
