Default What is the best XC90 D5 model/year??

Hi All,
As above what is the best XC90 D5 model year?? the reason i ask is i have owned many pre 06 models ie 163bhp and have loved them all and never had a problem. Now i have just bought a 200ps D5 auto which seems like a completely different animal ie loads of power fast off the mark no hesitation but swirl flaps/dpf/egr are these things i should be worrying about ???

Best is a subjective term that means different things to different people.

But I would say....

From an engineering perspective, the pre 2005MY Euro 3 163 cars - the most economical, very refined, easiest to maintain and most reliable. But - the best of those cars will be very close to 20 years old now and will inevitably suffer from age related issues...

From a everyday use I think the 2011MY onwards 200PS cars. They're so much different to the 185's even though its essentially the same engine with new software, but it does have the Gen2 TF80 gearbox which has a few improvements. But, weak end-user tech such as no DAB radio... and all the extra emissions controls do seem fragile.

These things will break eventually, but I wouldn’t “worry” about them. Make sure the car is properly serviced, use decent fuel (not cheap supermarket stuff) and ensure it gets regular motorway trips. Driving a diesel to pop to your local shops causes issues with EGR’s and DPF’s. Diesel’s need to be driven.

Thanks for the replies like i said all my previous XC90's have been pre 06 163bhp. But my latest 2010 200ps seems the quietest of the lot with loads of power. I am thinking remove the swirl flaps/dpf/erg and were back to 163 reliability but with lots of grunt on tap 😁

Are the the 200 ps timing belts or chain. I have had earlier xc90s with belts, still have the locking kit but been told timing chain.

2004 model year before they messed with the waterproofing on top of the CEM ! Best engine too , economical and trouble free.

Yup, that is all I have known, but at this age you initially pay for someone else's lack of maintenance, wear and tear. I have had mine for over 6 years so at least the wear and tear is mine.

My old (03) xc90 cost me at least £1k a year just to keep up with maintence. I am sure this is typical. Bits like alternator and steering pump this year just pack up and sorting these will not stop worn brakes, steering and suspension items etc etc.

But at least depreciation is no impact on such an old car. It is now (hopefully) worth almost my annual cost.

I am sure later models can cost at least £1k in depreciation in a year and judging by this forum still can have expensive problems.

Perhaps my next car will be ex90!!!. (In my dreams)..

Very happy with my 09 R-Design 185bhp. Goes and handles very well for a 2.2ton bus.
