Default '02 S80 2.4 engine Identify help please

Today, when overtaking a lorry, blue smoke out the back. Back home opened bonnet to find that oil had been sprayed from out the back (side) of the engine. I have attached a picture of the 'hole' where the oil is coming out.

It is underneath the exhaust manifold. I have inserted a screwdriver to make it easier to spot.
Does anyone have any idea what is supposed be in that hole or attached to it?

Many thanks for your help.

Rudy

It looks like the hole is the gearbox casing, the oil touching the hot exhaust could have caused the smoke.

Is your car an automatic?

I'd treat driving it with caution now, you don't want to damage it any more. You may be lucky and just get away with a new plug.

I'm assuming the pic was taken from the passenger side end of the engine?

Thanks for the reply guys.

Yes, my S80 is an automatic, but I'm fairly sure it's engine oil that is coming out.

according to the link Coventry posted there should be a core plug in that hole.

I'll try and take a more clearer picture as to where this hole is located exactly

Pretty much failed to take a better pic as the room there is extremely limited.

I have one where you can see it is just above the steering rack.

Re: core plugs.

I always thought that these were only fitted at a location were only water passes so in case the water freezes the plugs pop out preventing the block from cracking - hence the alternative name is freeze plugs.

I might be wrong though...........

I think I have found the plug I need.
It's a 20mm core plug.
part number 8687868

Seals the oil gallery normally used by the oil feed return pipe of a turbo version of this engine.
I believe, from factory, Volvo uses a rubber bung to seal this. This is now replaced with a 20mm steel cup shape core plug

Hi Rudolph,

I can't reply to your PM as my post count isn't high enough, but the part number you have is correct. It's around £2.50 from your local Volvo dealer.
What i've been told is that the original rubber seal perishes, and eventually allows the plug to drop out. Fitting the new one is as simple as just knocking it in with a hammer.

Hi,

Picked the plug up from Volvo dealer this morning £2.52 incl VAT. I had trouble getting it in from the top. From underneath, with a socket snug in the plug, it was a few minutes job.
