Default Boot/ tailgate probs

For a start... Merry christmas, New Year. Extra drinks on me.

My struts in my 850 t5 have been ropey for a while. Yesterday the boot won't close. It looks like the whole tailgate has dropped, as the locking part of the tailgate is hitting the car before it click in too the lock in the boot area.

Would this be because the gas struts have given up?

Any other reason the tailgate would drop like this?

Could do with some ideas as i can't use the car as it is.

Cheers

Hi,

Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay here..

Struts "gone" would make the tailgate feel like half a ton to lift and will allow the tailgate to close with a heart-wrenching slam!

If there is another issue opening and closing then it may be that the hinge-pin is out of place or there may be an issue with the hinge itself..

You can get new struts for about £14 from PFV on-line (or walk into one of their stores)..
I would in the first instance check the operation of the tailgate, and inspect the hinges - and have something to support it while you are looking.
A broom or step ladder suitably wrapped to aviod damage.

Blimey, that was quick.

I know the struts need replacing, they have for a while. The biggest problem now is a can't close the boot because it appears the whole estate boot has slightly dropped meaning that the lock does not connect cleanly.

Maybe it is the hinge, may have bent? What is the hinge-pin, where can i find this?

Gotta say though, i love the car. It's an 850 T5CD 1996 estate auto, 113000 miles.

Default Boot/Tailgate repair ??

Hi

Do you mean the actual inner panelling inside the tailgate is coming away from the inside of the tailgate ??

If so,this is a common problem on the 850 estate tailgates, the clips/poppers lose their grip and pop loose......there is a tailgate repair kit available, costs approx £10,not sure where to get them but they are readily available.

Hope this helps.

John.

and fit them like this....http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/tailgate_trim.php
the gas strutts are easy to replace too, you will need to remove some of the interior trim and remember to prop the tailgate as you will soon know how heavy they are when you release one of the, even worn strutts......
cheers
