Shifting problem
Hi,
I just bought a 940 SE Turbo estate (1991), with 2 litre engine. It drives very well, except for one disturbing problem. It is very hard to get into first gear, and this really irritates especially when I'm at the front of queue at traffic lights. Reverse gear also is a problem, will not engage without horrible 'kkrrrchhhggg' sound, so loud that can be heard the whole street. Could anyone explain what is the problem here? I hope it is not as bad as it sounds. Any help is very much appreciated. Kruskal Durham |

Hi,
Sounds silly but try getting second, and change to first. Is that easier, less noisy? Sounds like the clutch is on its way out but I would also check you gearbox oil level and top it up.. Des. . .

Shifting problem.
I have a similar problem with my 99 S40, I have a problem only getting it into first gear (not always). I've read else where that this may be a problem with the bushings on the gear linkage. I think it is unlikely to be a clutch problem or I would have a problem in all gears!
Sorry I can't be of more help. |

Clutch drag??
I have a similar symptom on first and reverse, but perhaps not quite so bad, and there is a note in the paperwork with the car (16V GLT 745) from a volvo garage saying "new clutch needed", but there is no slip and it tows fine.
I have been told bleeding the clutch can help but I have not tried it yet. I also have an occasional graunch on third (M46 box with O/D) and sometimes the O/D will not disengage so I was planning on changing the gearbox oil, seeing if I could get at the solder connections for the O/D, and if all else fails hunt for an M90 and flywheel to go with it and put a new clutch in at the same time. |

Shifting problem
Had similar with my 940, tough to get 1st and reverse. New clutch cured problem. Fiction plate was very shiny, and down to rivets.
There were no other indications of problems, even when towing. |

Shifting problem
Hi.
Had a similar problem with my 745 a couple of years ago, changed all the bushes in the linkage but things were no better, bought a second hand gearbox from someone who was breaking a similar vehicle for £30.The people who do my servicing changed the 'boxes over one Saturday morning, charged me £60 to do that, and Bingo! problem solved. It was a different car. This was all about three years ago. Hope this helps T.T.F.N. Jeff W.
