Default V70 engine top mount

Just looking under the bonnet tonight and wondered if my engine top mount is shot. Seen lots of posts about it before, but unsure as to whether mine is gone or not. Basically you can see light through the mount. Does this mean it has perished, or is it just the way it is made? I have attached a photo. Excuse the quality, but it was just on my phone. Thanks.

When mine was shot, if you revved the engine while in neutral then the engine would rotate. Even worse if you let 1st gear slip with the handbrake on.

Philip,

from the picture, it looks ok. The centre mounting is only held by webs at the top and bottom of the mounting. In the fore and aft position are 'bump stops', when new there is often rubber flashing joining these to the centre mounting, but they are only a few thou thick.

If the mounting has done quite some service or you think that it's weak, it's better to change it - they are a cheap item (even direct from Volvo!) so they must be sold in quantity!

It has been suggested elsewhere here that letting the top mount become weak will allow the engine more movement and possibly cause the lattice on the exhaust manifold to fail.

Cheers

Hi Philip,

you're right it's time for a new one. Don sells them for about £25.00 i think what i paid for mine approx. Be warned though they only come in bright yellow! see www.powerflex.co.uk (Don's supplier)

The bushes themselves are available from Nordic for a fiver. Bear in mind though they are a tight fit. I went down the lazy road and left the mount on the car while I changed it. Ended up having to knock up a wooden jig to pull the mount in.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

Having just spent 200 notes on 2 michelins and 175 on some front disks and pads, I think i will just keep an eye on this mount for the next couple of months and maybe replace it early next year.

My long running cold starting issue has just reared its ugly head again (first frost of the year Sun am) so I might be in for some expense fixing that also! (If I can ever find the problem that is....)

Cheers

Hi Iain,

apparently the very late V70's (according to Don) have a different top mount, hence now I have a huge yellow doughnut in the engine bay.

"ps moving on to a weightier subject - how's the bonnet"
lol, no change there Ian.

hopefully see you at the CB met Iain.

regards,

Hi Philip,

the garage that replaced my top mount (local Volvo specialist)said to leave the top mount could cause damage on some other parts of the engine. I'm not 100% sure but I'm sure it was to do with the exhaust manifold, surely without the resistance of the top mount the engine will twist/flex more than intended and perhaps cause damage on components that were never meant to flex at all. ie. manifold joints etc..

For the relatively small sum of money for the top mount, and the potential damage caused through not having a 100% working one, I wouldn't have thought it was worth leaving it for to long IMO.

regards,
