am having problems with various fuel pumps on my D5 at 125k miles started out with a failed electrical fuel pump in the tank but now its looking like the engine mounted pumps may also be at risk . Apparently metal particles in the fuel tank or the fuel filter bowl may mean the high pressure pump is 'eating itself' and it will fail soon , the particles are fed back to the tank from the engine via the return pipe . If I were buying another older D5 I would want to at least take off the plastic fuel filter housing and have a look ( you can only do this on 2003 models onwards , the earlier ones have a metal canister ) , or maybe just the drain plug would do it , but anyway I suppose you would need a very cooperative seller to allow you to do this and of course you would need to be sure they hadnt just cleaned it out five minutes earlier , thats just me be being cynical !
