Default servicing the box...

folks,

my latest addition to my fleet has come to me with the rather old school 3 speed auto & O/D now I'm a big fan of autos as they are much nicer to drive around town and my daily commute is just that.

However, I have no idea when the fluid was last changed and have yet to properly check the fluid level as I do not know the correct procedure for doing so!!

As it stands the car selects reverse and drive no problem with no delay or clunking, but it does like to hold onto 2nd for longer than it should - eg, if you give it the beans and then ease off instead of changing into 3rd theres a noticeable pause and when it does select 3rd its quite violent!

Basically I get the feeling it just wants some new oil and a filter. Presumably dextron II? Where would I see about getting a filter, whats the capacity and is there anything I need to watch for?

Oh and The car has had a very recent radiator so the trans cooler part of that (should) be clean?!

advice and help greatly appreciated!

Nick

As long as you take your time a trans fluid change will do no harm, but sometimes adjusting the kickdown cable at the throttle drum can help with some nasty gear changes. I had a kickdown cable with a kink in it and changes became almost dangerous. I replaced the cable but to do that I had to take the sump off anyway so a fluid change was needed also.

If I remember it should take 9 litres of fluid, the filter is easily seen once the transmissions sump is off but to take the filter off I think its 5 small bolts but to get good access to at least one of them means removing one of the fluid bypass pipes don't worry they just pull off and slip back in place with a bit of spring in the pipe to hold them in.

The whole process isn't to hard but you need to remember to work in as clean an environment as you can just imagine that an auto transmission is far more easily damaged than a manual gearbox is if some grit gets in the wrong place.

Good luck

Nice idea Antz but what if you only have the use of one leg, or if your unlucky enough to have an automatic only license.

To take it to your local independent automatic specialist (there will be one) - I have been faffing about with my auto box for two years and just about have it tamed.

Then stick with the auto?

Having sold Nick the car in question, I know that he has two legs and somehow a full driving license so an m90 wouldn't be a problem for him.

there WAS Aberdeen automatics, a superb place by all accounts. now bust. I'm not a fan of paying other people to do something I could unless I'm on a tight timescale... and on this car as its not my daily driver then I can take as long as I want faffing about.

I think the key things I need to know are:
  • capacity/ fluid type
  • how to read the dipstick!
  • how to adjust the kickdown cable- on the assumption its old and perhaps stretched a little

I very much would like to M90 the car but on my to do list that's one of the last jobs so we shall see if that happens or not

Nick

Is the auto box still under implied warranty from that sale?

Hi Nick,

the kickdown cable adjustment can be a little bit of a black art. There is an 'optimum' setting but you can fine tune it somewhat to match your driving style. Mine was replaced about 6 months ago as it had rusted solid in the housing! The fluid level is quite important to good gear change too. Too little or too full will give issues. I got a large 20ltr drum of Dextron II from a company in Darlington on ebay (will post link when I find it). I use a vacuum pump via the dipstick tube to empty and refill. I have done this a few times so my fluid is all nice an red now.

There is quite a lot posted on Brickboard/Turbo Bricks, and elsewhere on the net about setting up the kickdown cable. It helps changing in both directions so 'kickdown' is only one of the things that it does.
