This can be quite a deep discussion especially as engines get tuned or used under different conditions.

As a general guide, a good quality 5w40 will be fine. I have used Valvoline 5w40 fully synthetic (always purchased from Amazon for about £31 per bottle).

So i went for 5w40 fully synthetic, car runs quite nice and quiet now, gave it an engine flush too, only thing now is the dodgey idle.

What's your engine code?

Dodgey idle could be SAI or ICAV both are easily enough to clean

Did you just do an oil change on its own or did you carry out a full service?

Engine flush is best avoided as it strips internal oil seals etc of the oil coatings they need to stay in good condition.

Fwiw I tried an engine flush once on a BMW 328i that I used to own despite avoiding marketing hype previously. Afterwards the car would randomly cut out as you came to a stop at traffic lights. The cure turned out to be another oil change but due to the engine flush I went up a grade to a slightly thicker oil.
