Default 940 - worn bearings in gearbox

I purchased a '94 940 about four months ago, 2.0 Turbo with 120k miles and 4 speed manual gearbox with overdrive

my 4th Volvo but 1st 940

it has developed a noise when driving except when the overdrive button is engaged, very hard to describe the noise, it is not a whine but it is similar (!)

I have had a (good) mechanic look at it and he tells me it is "worn bearings on the lay shaft, the problem will only get worse and the gearbox will eventually die"

he also tells me that is uneconomical to repair as the car is 11 years old

notwithstanding this, I am very happy with the car and would like to get it fixed - does anyone have any ideas on the approx cost of rebuilding the gearbox or alternatively buying and fitting a secondhand unit

grateful for any advice

regards

Richard

I'd just stick a second hand unit in it, plenty of 940's about and there not that bad job to change

yeah, look around for a getrag m90(5 speed manual found in later 940s). you were unlucky as your `94 940 must have been one of the last off the line with an m46(4 speed with overdrive)(my `94 940 has an M90 but the M47(old 5 speed) is still a good unit but not as good as the m90, however the later(post 96) m90 is even better and capable of holding upto 500hp!
