Default soot over boot

After running it along the motorway, a thin layer of slightly oily soot appears on the boot lid. I've changed leads, dissy cap, rotor arm and air filter. Engine light isn't on (haven't checked for any codes but assume there aren't any?).

Worth trying a new MAF and some new plugs you think?

For the price of a MAF I'd keep an eye on oil levels and take it for a run on another day after cleaning it, but doubt it would be that any way.
Take it you have an estate? as it would seem to me you have a reasonable leak, look under the car all the way

yes, under the car there is oil running back, but it looks old, not fresh. I was thinking MAF because does soot not mean its running rich? I have a spare MAF so I suppose I've got nothing to lose. The one on the car looks brand new though!

Might this not be connected to your other post re the smoking/leaking turbo?
You say the 'soot' is oily.

not a clue!

It might very well be connected, but isn't if it was just oil spewing out, there wouldn't be soot would there?

I'm assuming the smoke you talked of was burning oil? And as you drive along the smoke would travel front to rear. I'd have money on that being the cause

is the oil coming out of the zoorst or getting blown back under the car?...
check the condition of the plugs, if they are black oily or sooty this would indicate rich running...
how is your temprature gauge behaving?....
cheers

I don't know tbh. There is fresh oil under the car now and it now drops oil when parked up after a run.

Temp guage is rock solid in the middle and gets there nice and quickly. Haven't checked the plugs yet actually.

in my experience tom you can judge where the leak is coming from simply by looking from the front where the drips are...centrally would be return pipe or sump plug gasket or to the right as you look (nearside as you sit) rear main seal leak....
if the temp is good i would not expect you to be tunning in cold cycle mode so it may well be the maf although i would have expected the exhaust sensor to be able to adjust the fueling, and the maf should throw a light.....
cheers
