Default windshield wiper linkage

not sure if they are called windshield wipers in the UK but anyways i replaced my 25+ year old wipers and turned them on once i got them replaced only to hear a knocking sound coming from under the dash. upon tearing out the glove box to get the the wiper arms under the dash i seen that the plastic D shaped pieces that connect the 2 metal arms, one coming from the wiper motor the other connected to the wipers, were busted. they dont seem to be the greatest option to connect the two arms. has anyone else ran into this issue or have a solution to the problem? i thought about using some epoxy to glue them together then maybe drill a few holes and run bolts through it. not sure the plastic will hold up to that though.

There were at least two makes of the wiper mechanism. One with ball joints and the other with flat metal strips and plastic rings around a rod of the connecting piece. The first will never wear out, in the second the metal strip will cut through the platsic bits.
Bad news however, the first type has a connection to the wiper motor that will wear out. the second has a spline type connection that will last forever.

Solution: frankenstein the best parts of both systems together. Cut the connecting rod just after the splined connection and weld it to the other system.
