I will soon be selling my 1989 Volvo 740 GL Estate

I did a post the other day signing off the 700/900 series forums as I have just acquired a diesel V40 but at the time I thought that the 740 was going to be taken by a family member. However, they are no longer able to take it so I will probably now be putting the 740 on the market.

It is a pre-face lift 1989 2.0 litre direct petrol injection model in white, with the rear facing fold-away seats in the boot. I bought it from a Volvo dealer’s forecourt in January 1996 when it had 96,000 miles on the clock – and it has now done 246,000. It has been regularly serviced by an independent garage since I bought it – and I have all the receipts from the garage and old MOT certificates since 1996.

Like all 740s of that era it did suffer from saggy headlining a few years ago – but that was comprehensivley fixed by my installing the headlining from a 940 – and there have been no more problems since.

In addition to regular servicing and things like brakes, tyres, hoses, track rod ends, ball sockets etc in the last few years it has also had a lot of work done:

• April 2008 – 2 new (Volvo) front wings fitted – the originals had corrosion on the wheel arches
• June 2008 – new windscreen
• August 2008 – new water pump and timing belt
• March 2010 – new alternator
• March 2011 – fitted second hand tank unit and new clutch
• May 2011 – new front and intermediate exhaust pipe sections
• June 2011 - new brake master cylinder, front to reat brake pipes, flexi brake pipes and rear brake calipers
• July 2011 – new distributor cap and rotor arm
• October 2011 – new cylinder head gasket, new timing belt, repaired heater matrix, new water pump and viscous coupling, fitted second hand auxiliary air valve
• January 2012 – new clutch cylinder and new steering rack

In 2002 the odometer seized at 141,000 and a brand new speedo and odometer were fitted – which is why the mileage now displayed is 105,000 – but in reality the mileage is 246,000.

During my 16 years nothing has been done to the gearbox or back axle.

The bodywork is in good order – a few minor rust patches on internal door seams and rear wheel arches - which can be kept at bay.

The car is 23 years old so is not in pristine condition, but I would hate to see it sent to a scrap yard as there is more life in it. I am selling it because I no longer need a big load lugger and I need something more economical for my regular long distance trips.
