Exclamation Broken volvo v40

Good day,

I have a 2017 volvo v40 d2.

Just been told it needs a new engine and turbo as there is metal in the oil.

Do you think I need a second opinion? Car is in great condition apart from needing a new engine and turbo

I am looking to get rid of it because £15000 for a new engine is more than the car is worth.

Please let me know and any advice would be greatly appreciated

I'd get a second opinion as that sounds a very sweeping diagnosis, but unfortunately to get a second opinion you'd need to have the car transported elsewhere and some partial disassembly done which will cost. At £15k for a new engine and turbo I'm assuming that's from a dealer, and as you say it makes the car not economically viable. I think you need to find a friendly, trustable local garage who could repair the existing engine or fit a second hand one (likely the best option). I doubt the turbo has gone as well but it is Volvo standard procedure to replace it just in case...

If you look on ebay for Volvo V40 D2 engine, remember your car is the later 2.0 D2 not the 1.6, and look only at sales from Charles Trent, ASM or Synetic (reputable large vehicle dismantlers) or other companies with 96%+ feedback you will see engines for sale with 3-6 months warranty around £1,500 - £2,500. If you add another £1,000-£1,500 for fitting, new cambelt and servicing - you should be back on the road for well under £5k.

You've been very unluck, these engines are normally reliable which is why they are cheap second hand. If you had a 1.6 Ford, PSA or a 2.0 Jaguar/Land Rover you'd be at x3 the cost.

If you do choose to get rid, best option is put the car on e-bay as Spares or Repairs.

I agree with Tannaton above. However, you may get more responses by posting in the correct forum for your car. This deals with the classic S/V40 upto 2004 - completely different cars.

If you're doubting the diagnosis, you could just put new oil in and drive it. If the engine is toast anyway. But yeah, another car is your cheapest source for another engine. Do you like the car? Buy an identical model and replace broken bits. Do you almost like the car? Buy one you prefer and use yours for spares. Transfer the bits you like.

Anyway, you're in the wrong section. This is for classic V40s up to 2004. Maybe 17,000 woudl be worth it on a newer car, I dunno. But I won't make you walk, hitch a ride here: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=194
