Default V40 handbrake

V40 1.8 GDI 2001 I have replaced the rear discs pads and calipers but still have the handbrake not going back to the stop on the right hand side;the cables move freely so could it be just a case of 1 cable has stretched? m. many thanks m cooper

Sadly this is quite common and is normally a defective caliper. Folk like Antz or Gatos can normally help you out.

Have the callipers got springs on them?

I think phase 2 have springs on them for this reason.

I forget the technical bits about the rear callipers but I know you shouldn't move the levers before they are installed. If you do there is a procedure to reset them that involves something like partially winding the piston out and then winding it all the way back in.

If both calipers arms where the handbrake cable attaches too are moving freely, then most probably stretched cable. You can easily find out by removing the centre console and checking the joint between the handbrake rod and the cables. There is a pivot bracket where the cables attach to. It should be horizontal both with the handbrake engaged and disengaged. If it is at an angle then one cable is stretched
