Default Groaning on turn after long hot run

I've just come back from driving my 03 c70 to Sorrento. Awesome experience, particularly putting the top down and driving over the alps.
Aside from the usual starting problems, which got worse in the heat (I must try cleaning the immobiliser ring connections) I had a rather odd problem. After a long run in the heat, the steering would start to groan on full lock. It didn't sound like rubbing. The next morning, when it was cool, everything would be fine. And since coming back to the UK it's fine too, so I'm not too concerned. Just curious.
Anyone got any thoughts?

Check to see how worn the steering lock stops are or if one has dropped off - Mike

I always groan after a long run.....

Seriously - check the power steering fluid when it's hot (and also when it's cold for that matter) - I've had cars make a groaning noise on full lock when the level's been low.

Could be that the Power Steering Fluid needs changed, it tends to collect water like brake fluid and should be changed occasionaly. I have had that problem in the past and changing the fluid cured it. Its a simple DIY job if you are able to do it yourself, the steering hydraulics are self bleeding.
