Nice 240, are they making them again? I can see them selling well in India or Africa

The new S60 is a really nice car. The power and efficiency are worlds apart from the 240. Having spent the weekend with access to both, we chose the S60 for a jaunt down the duel carriage way, as it's so effortless. I completely understand why people like modern cars.

However, this all changed when we needed to empty a large amount of rubbish that had been cluttering up the loft. There was simply no contest.

Purely on grounds of aesthetics the 240 wins hands down over the boring red blob that obscured the view! It's a matter of proportion, the 240 ticks nearly all of the design criteria boxes, it's a very beautiful car even after all these years. And what's the point of all the performance in modern cars? In this country we have a 70 m.p.h. limit, and making cars that will corner at great speed simply encourages bad driving; it was emphasised to me early on that we must drive within the limits of visibility.

A 240 will trickle effortlessly on a motorway at 70, something around 2,500 r.p.m. I think, with plenty to spare in an emergency. My first experience of a 240 was as a passenger relaxing in comfort and only aware after quite a while that we were doing a highly illegal 90!

Ok, so I'm showing my age, but to me nearly all modern cars are characterless and dull, only really attracting buyers because of all the, usually unnecessary and sometimes counter-productive, electronic gizmos. All very clever but really, who cares!!

I much prefer the visibility the 240 gives as the S60 has comparably thick door panels, and I refuse to reverse park it. I also hate not having a proper handbrake. The S60 will cruise at 70 in 6th gear at 1500 rpm, which does make a big difference to the noise and mpg. Progress is usually for the better. However, it's way out of my price range and the depreciation is ridiculous. The ads also seem to make the 240 look tiny, when it really isn't.

I wonder what a 240 would cruise at rpm wise if it too had a 6th gear?

240's are long yes, but they are a lot slimmer than many modern cars, even a new Fiesta looks obese parked next to a 240.
