Default T4 Head Gasket

My beloved 1998 S40 T4 broke down today which the RAC diagnosed as Head Gasket failure after 2 minutes looking at it on the side of the motorway in the pouring rain but I just wanted to get a second opinion...
Car's been feeling hesitant for a couple of days but temperature normal and oil ok - no sign of "mayo" round the cap or on dipstick. It's felt like this before but a change of coils and plugs sorted it.
Radiator coolant is not oily but is red like rust tho not overheating. Car has been sounding like a diesel for some time but Volvo dealer couldn't resolve even after exhaust change etc.
Thought it might be plugs/electrical until car started to slow on the motorway on the way home and wouldn't go above 30mph!!
Any ideas welcome - I know I'm probably clutching at straws though!
Thanks
