Just read the thread which is linked here. There was some questions about whether to paint aluminium. As Khe Sanh stated, aluiminium does corrode & if left unpainted it will oxidise into a powdery dust even if it is not in contact with steel or taken out on the road. Ordinary metal primer will not adhere to it, you need to coat with etch primer first, preferably two coats, then whatever paint or protection you want over that. I am currently restoring a 1930 coach the roof of which a previous owner had re-panelled in aluminium but left unpainted for many years. These panels now have a very heavy powdery surface deposit from the oxidised metal even though the vehicle was stored under cover & had not been out on the road. They have no contact with steel as the coach has a wooden frame & now need to be completely replaced with new. I would always recommend painting to preserve the metal.

I fitted plastic inner fenders to my Amazon because I think they have more coverage but the Lokari aluminum inner fenders are another good choice and have been produced in Finland since the 60's I believe and with their weather I'd think they know what they are doing. Those Aluminium inner fenders would probably outlast the car they're fitted to even left raw. How often is your car going to be subject to winter conditions..daily?? Painting wouldn't really add any more protection IMO as the inner wings are subjected to a lot of stone chip etc..maybe better if your going to coat them to use stone chip sealent or underseal.....

Just some facts about aluminum corosion. Aluminium can be protected with a protection called Aludine. It can be aplied in clear, gold, black, military green or what ever your requirements are. It is a thin layer of a few My that is applied and goes in to connection with the aluminium surface and afterwards dryed in an oven.
I dont know if the Locari inner fenders have been aplied with Aludine, but I am quite sure the aluminium is protected from the factory. The Finns sure know what they are doing and use these inner fenders in all kind of weather. There are also different grades of aluminium, some more corrosion resistant than others. The aludine is also used on military equipment and jet fighters, where the bare aluminium often is visible.

I don't think that they are available in plastic. I asked VP and they sent me a link to product 235 which was for the Amazon. I asked if they fitted a P1800 and they said that they didn't.
Here are the ali ones http://www.lokari.de/epages/62716287.../IKF-2351-2352 Note that these are just the fronts Last edited by P1800Ray; Jan 29th, 2014 at 16:54. Reason: More info |
