Question What is it?

Have just purchased a 1.8 440 SE and doing a service when I came across at the front of the engine block a black cannister and two pipes leading off it.The 'cannister' was insulated as well as the larger rubber pipe.Is it an oil breather and can it be replaced?

I would imagine it's a charcoal breathing system my 760 has a similar thing.

It takes some of the fumes from the petrol and does it's magic.

I'm sure it's that. If anyone knows differently let us know. Don't know if they're replaceable but on a Mercedes S 500 I had you could clean it some how I will dig out the info and let you know.

It's the evaporation system. takes all the unwanted fumes and dissolves them in carbon.
