Default Model line up

What does the R design model have over the others please?
What’s the order of spec in the Volvo line up? Wife has an SE Lux XC70. Seems well specced. What would be the difference between say a XC90 lux SE and an R design XC 90? It gets complicated trying to compare them from Auto trader adverts. Is R design the very top spec?
Thanks, John.

From memory but stand to be corrected

SE

SE Lux

R Design

Executive.

There is a base model below the SE with half vinyl/cloth seats and smaller wheels.

The R design has firmer suspension and larger wheels than SE and Lux.

Morning have a look at the model brochures on the VOC pages and on the forums ... as far as I remember the R design is the same as the Sport (name change.)

In sales speak its the "sporty one" but TBH its got some revised trim (wheels, leather) and suspension tweaks and that's about it and sat above the SE, but below the SE Lux .... the line up went
S/Active, SE, Sport/R Design, SE Lux and Executive (plus premium pack add ons in later models)

No doubt some will disagree, nice car but IMO the SE Lux or Exec are much nicer cars/equip than the pretend "Sports model"

Have a read.

^^^^^ All of the above.

R-Design replaced the "Sport" designation and is essentially stiffer suspension, larger diameter wheels (i.e. harsher ride and more expensive tyres that don't last as long), blue instrument back ground (Oooooo), twin exhausts so you can't have a spare wheel and sporty bucket style seats. Oh and two things that are not available on ANY other model combination - LH and RH silver door mirror covers.

On the Mk 1 XC90 I cannot see the point......

When I was looking for an XC90, I discounted the R design due to the above.

Agree, as above ... lumpy ride and only one electric seat and no "soft" leather plus a few other "extra/must haves" (spare wheel) missing compared to the SE Lux ... that's why I went for the SE Lux ... but I did like the look of the rear exhaust, but not at the expense of the spare wheel (funny the things that are important to you.)

I have the R-design and I agree the lack of spare wheel is a nuisance but when the exhaust gives out I plan to get stainless with 2 pipes down one side as standard so I can put a spare wheel back in (have one waiting). I do like the blue dials, of course I would not buy just to have them but with the bucket seats as well the cabin is a nice place to be plus there is very little body roll - incredibly impressive. On the odd occasion you do notice the hard suspension on a bumpy road but this is rare; on the motorway it is silent. At the end of the day it is your choice and that is what is great about these cars - whichever model you go for you will not be disappointed. Having fallen in love with the 5 pot engine way back in a mark 1 Passat coupe (now that was ooooo! V fast - a wolf in sheep's clothing!), this Volvo Penta engine is wonderful - the torque is amazing!!

The Exec comes with 19" wheels.
The ride is not as comfortable as the 18" wheels (I have a set of Atlantis 18" as my winter wheels).

Swiss, the fifth exhaust on yours is actually a leak.
