tappety engine
Hi guys and girls,
B18u is very tappety, I have a feeling that the exhaust manifold gasket has gone again. It shuts up very slightly when hot and just squeaks through the mot on emissions. Any ideas on where to look or do you think im fairly accurate in my assumption?

Impossible to say really without seeing/hearing it, but if it really is tappet noise (i.e. cam/cam followers) then it could be bad news. You haven't just adjusted the valve clearances have you? If you don't get them right then they will make a tappet noise, otherwise could be cam/cam follower excess wear. Oldish Fords can often be heard with a really bad tappet noise - ticking noise at half engine speed.
With any luck it will just be the exhaust gasket!! IanF |

Haven't touched the valves, only when I put ipa (brake cleaner) on the surface when changing a headgasket. The engine has done only 79k was slightly tappety then. Hmm ill try the exhaust gasket and hopefully it sorts it, if not the top is comming off again.

Before doing any work I would make a determined effort to identify where the sound is coming from. Have a listen to the cam with the oil filler cap removed (OK, you will get a bit of oil spray, but if the noise is from the cam it should be louder). And stick your ear as close to the manifold as you can, just watch out for singed hair. I would have thought that the sound of a blowing exhaust gasket was quite distinct from a ticking tappet?
If you do decide on it being a cam/cam follower issue, then the first step is to check the clearances are OK. Too tight and you may burn a valve, too slack and you will get a clacking sound. Also examine the cam and follower surfaces for any obvious signs of wear/pitting/discolouration. Lots to do before you start ripping it apart I think? best of luck, IanF p.s. a good 2 litre B20F is sitting in my 440 awaiting a new home!! |

Hmm...
Chances are it's the tappet shims that are kiffed. Trouble is, they're nigh on impossible to get hold of now. Add that to the fact that it has to be stripped down to see what sizes you need before trying to source some!
