940LPT - retrofit viscous fan?
OK, this is probably a stupid idea but I'm considering retro fitting a viscous fan to my 940LPT...
I know about the pros & cons, but I've been told that it won't fit the space at the front of the engine due to the intercooler. Has anyone actually done this? Can it be done without leaving a tiny tiny gap between the rad and the fan??? Why? Because I recall a neighbour having a 240 with a viscous fan, and I loved the whirring sound from the fan when he started his car! Childish I know, but...

Personal opinion of course but I think they sound awful, they are so noisy and annoying, as you're planning to renew the air con I would consider why Volvo fitted an electric fan to all air con equipped 940's in the first place, the viscous fan probably wasn't up to the job.

You can always use a 360 water pump and pulley if it's tight.🤔

I know, they still sound like junk when they do kick in.

Have a sound recording of a 740 starting up piped through the speaker system when you start it up, like they do with the modern cars.

The radiators in later, a/c, turbo cars with electric fans were larger. I doubt an older, viscous fan will fit in the same fan shroud so you’d have to work out a way of fitting a smaller shroud over part of the radiator. Or, of course, fit a smaller radiator.
Similar considerations will apply to swapping out the water pump pulley. There were two sizes for the B230 so you will need to check that the viscous fan clutch is compatible with the smaller, turbo pulley. Or, accept a slower pump speed as well. The whole project sounds like a recipe for overheating if you ask me! |

Thanks Forrest, I've decided that its a non starter really - too many potential pitfalls to be worth the risk.
