Question Volvo Guard Alarm

I am interested in knowing people's opinions on the 'Volvo Guard Alarm' fitted to some 740s (and other models).

Is it worth bothering with? Any known problems?

Could it lower my insurance renewal by fitting the kit myself?

The reason I ask is because I think one of my (currently inaccessible) cars might have this alarm fitted. It has the VGA stickers (with the hand) in the windows so I'm sure it would have had an alarm fitted at some point. I don't have a fob and there is no LED on the dash or A-piller. Are there any other components I can look for to find out if the alarm is still present? IIRC, there is a switch near one of the bonnet catches. I don't know if this is part of the alarm though.

Also, by fitting the Volvo alarm, would it give me remote central locking? Does the alarm system include an immobiliser?

I think the early VGA systems, were a switch to operate, then with VGA1 they became remote and used the central locking, which with the switch type would be impossible, due to have to arm it with the doors closed.

Either yours is an early type, or someone has just put the stickers on it to deter criminals.

Yes it looks like an early one then. I gained access to the car today and I found a black box with a switch in the glovebox. There is also a siren under the bonnet. So it looks like the alarm system is all present but unfortunately it will not work with remote central locking. I might still fit it...

My 780 have this alarm. It may be an older version that what we see in the picture as the box is white. However, the alarm is turned on either by a switch on the box (automatic arm) or via magnet held to windscreen.

Telling your insurance should make a difference, but don't expect loads!

A magnet held to the windscreen? There must be a sensor for that too then. Do you hold the magnet near a specific part of the windcreen?

Whilst I dont want to hijack Old Blues thread, I would like to know where the Volvoguard 2 box is on the Celebration Estate?

Does anyone know, cos I think I need to replace mine?

There is a magnet (I think!) that sits glued to the windscreen above the dashboard. In order to arm, one needs to hold this other magnet to the windscreen.

A very common alarm solution in the 80's (at least it was in Sweden!).

It was officially sold and branded by Volvo as "Volvo Guard" and is not connected to the central locking as at the time, remote buttons was not offered. This came later.

I'm not sure that I have this magnetic sensor but I'll lookout for it.
