Default Volvo needing a loving new home..

Hi, my father in law can no longer drive his beloved 740GL on a F plate (eye sight). He has had it since it was 3 years old, originally owned by a bank in London. Black Saloon, with brown leather interior, automatic 2.0L. Just past its MOT (failed for rear break binding at a volvo garage) fixed by them. Only goes to a volvo garage at Downham Market Cambs for all work. Always been garaged and lovingly looked after.

Looking for offers, and most importantly a good home.. this is why I am posting here and not on ebay etc..

Any questions and I will find out the answers.

Thanks

Bob

Hi there

Good luck with the sale. If you can add a bit more detail about the car - mileage, MoT, tax, plus some pictures, then you'll improve your chances. A price would be good too.

When it comes to 740s the problems that tend to put folk off are a sagging headlining and non-functioning dashboard instruments.

An honest appraisal of the car's condition and provenance will help you sell it.

For example, if the car has no MoT, no tax and is sitting on 250,000 miles with the roof lining sagging or even ripped out then it'll have a value for some spares. But on the other hand, if it's perhaps a 100,000 miler, pristine inside and out with a full MoT and a bit of tax then the prospective buyers need to know!

Oh and contact details would be good too. This forum's private message system excludes those with less than 30 posts, so it pays to have an alternative means of contacting you.

Cheers

Jack

Oops! Sorry just re-read you post and I see that it does have a full MoT. This is good! Jack

Some of Jack's points are common sense, and all 740s will have a sagging headlining (to a lesser or greater extent) now - unless it has been recovered or replaced.

Some make too much fuss about this but it is an easy fix - time consuming - but easy.

Instruments that give the most trouble are the fuel and temp gauges...again this is an over emphasised issue...the newest 740s are over 20 years old, mine is 28 years old.

If the car is good why fuss about these two easily fixed issues?

I suggest you give a guide price (or a firm price), don't ask for offers - that's for eBay.

Jon.

Sparse it may be, but a description should only cover relevant facts, not the seller's opinions.

Quality of description not quantity.

Both descriptions leave much to be desired - photos are critical.

Thanks all that have commented.. been away for a few days.

The car has done just under 120,000 miles, the headline was sagging and he used upholstery pins to hold it up O.O

Every gauge works but the fuel gauge will show full tank when full, then a day later show 3 quarters. Drivers door looks like its been cleaned with grit on a cloth as shown in photo, not deep but present.

Just passed MOT last week at Volvo garage.

As for a price I haven't really got a clue what he expects for it or what its worth.

Default Unusual.

Let's trust it went to a good home - anyone on here buy it?

Slightly unusual specification, with the automatic transmission, leather and the special order paint, the cost new would have been on par with a GLE.

Company car tax treatment was lower for the B200E (one component of the tax regime in the 80s was capacity), but then the capital cost goes up as a result of the options - my bet is on the car being misordered by the dealer, and they were lucky enough to find a customer.

Did anyone notice the odd tail lights, one 744, and one 764 (the 764 has chrome trim, whereas the 744 trim is black) ?

Jon.
