For 6000 pounds you should be able to get a very nice 945 diesel or the early 850 diesels. I think that I am correct in saying that the 800 series came as diesel estates in 1995 and for that money, I would not settle for an earlier 940 either. The 940 cars were revised for the model year 1995 and became quieter and much nicer. Both cars can be found or equipped with a thrid boot mounted seat suitable for small children. The diesel with air co and autobox did 38 mpg, my 945 with ECC and autobox does about 33 mpg, the full blown turbo does somewhat less and the NA engines between the LPT and the diesels.
I have never owned nor driven a 850 car but they are in terms of fuel economy similar from what I have heard, the diesels somewhat better. The main difference without going into details is that the 850 is a more modern car, is FWD and smaller. The 900 series is RWD but I find the post 95 cars modern enough for me. I love the ECC system, it is the best I have ever seen.
