Crazy prices!
I've just seen this "rare Torslanda" on car and classic...some of the prices that are being asked for 240s at the moment are excellent news for current owners, but even still, this seller is crazy!

The world is full of optimists! It doesn't even have a very long MoT, and for that price any buyer would surely expect immaculate condition and lowish mileage. Ours, even with quite a few 'extras', a more luxurious interior and mileage around 168.000 wouldn't attract that sort of money, though it would be nice to think it might! Not that there's any chance anyway, what could one replace it with?
I never know if it's a good thing when some cars are priced beyond the reach of many users, it suggests that they're only to be used for special occasions, and that's a shame. When I acquired a Morris Traveller in 1988 it was for basic subsistence motoring, now they're practically a luxury purchase. |

What they ask for and what they get will be two very different things. He's not going to get anywhere near that for a car with 4 months MOT and no photos (at the time of viewing the ad).
240s do seem to be hard cars to value, every time I see one going for £500 my heart sinks, but sometimes they do seem to go for decent money. |

Middle aged Volvos are an acquired taste, not as funky as a seventies Ford, or mainstream like MGBs and Jags. The Classic car fraternity are notoriously fickle, wanting a pristine show item for less than the cost of a full service on a new blobmobile, then grizzle because the cars they love have all gone. What defines it for me are the people who come up to you at shows if you have an old car. First question "Have you had it long". Not" did you restore it? " Just enjoy them for what they are, cars that happen to have skipped a few decades! |

Guys sometimes it's worth paying that little bit extra for a 'very rear car'.

2nd stupid question is usually "whats it worth now then?".....I dont know, and I dont want to tell you even if I did. Go away. Love chatting to people about my cars but if they want to talk about how much its been restored, its value, how its not original as Ford intended or what MPG I get then my patience wears thin quickly and stupid questions as met with stupid answers. Anyway...Volvos are definitely an odd one to price. Mint GLTs go for good money, average ones dont make a lot but then a mint GL will still not make a lot of cash. They dont make the £200 on a street corner like they used to but there are bargains to be had. I paid £1000 for my GLT 3 years ago and felt I overpaid at the time but compared to some recent sales, I didnt do too bad with amount of history it has and its condition for the mileage.....then I ruined it =p Last edited by Antz; Mar 21st, 2014 at 15:20. |

I'm always trawling eBay looking at cheap/retro cars. I don't know if its just me of if eBay has changed something, but there seems to be very few cars turning up now in my searches. For example i used to put in Volvo 240-244-245-940 etc etc and the top of the lost would always be complete cars. Now all i seem to get is spares and the actual cars are getting harder to find.
I prefer old cars, but the popularity of all things "retro" has driven prices through the roof, and even for what at the time would have been considered a bit naff. I'm looking for a small cheap runabout like a k10 Micra or Cinqucento, used to see them for peanuts, you'll be Lucky to get one with T+T now for £500. The rolling insurance thing is now another inconvenience to deal with. Before you could leave unused vehicles on a drive etc, but i believe you have to have ongoing insurance now, so i can see more old stuff going for scrap rather than people paying for the insurance. Not suprised that blue estate is still up for sale, imo its more £600-1k its only the lowly SPEC. Quick question for you Torslanda owners, i know they are basic, windy windows etc but do they have central locking?
