Snapped timing belt engine timing help
Hello all on the boards. I hate to show up with an apparently time old question from all the reading I have done. I recently purchased a 2003 Volvo s40 with the 4cyl turbo engine plate on firewall says it is a 4204t. As my title says the timing belt was damaged valves bent the whole bit. I’ve pulled it apart had the valves replaced stem seals changed head surface trued I’m ready to go back together. Since I received the car like I did I wasn’t able to properly align things before the tear down of the engine leaving me with a bit of a puzzle. After all my research I feel confident I know how to align both camshaft and how to approach the exhaust vvt sprocket. My biggest concern and question of uncertainty at the moment would be the crankshaft.
Everybody references a mark on the crank pulley that lines up with a mark on the oil pump. I don’t see any clear kind of reference mark on the crankshaft pulley that would align with anything on the oil pump. Could anyone shed some light on this predicament for me? I don’t see a mark or botch on the crank pulley I do however see what looks like a v or an arrow on the flat outer face of the crankshaft pulley more towards the center of the pulley. Is this the mark I am to use to align the crank? Right now I have it at tdc on cylinder 1 but I understand these engines don’t use tdc as any kind of a reference for cam crank timing. Sorry to repeat such a worn out topic but I am having a hard time with this, I’m just excited to finally be able to drive this car after most the year of collecting parts and having machine work done.. Thanks everybody! |

Gatos what a beautiful, helpful, to the point person you are!
I sincerely thank you! I’ll give these links a read and give it another go when I can.. I’ve not messed with many Volvo engines, do they all have little to no actual markIngs on the rotating assembly like this one? |

Yes, the crank marks are not easy to see until you know what you are looking for. In addition to the cast marks on the crank boss and the oil pump housing there are two V indents on the back of the crank timing belt sprocket teeth. The two V marks line up either side of the oil pump mark. When the crank is positioned correctly all pistons will be level in the bores at the halfway point.
