Default Parking brake cable

Well, the inevitable has happened!
I have ignored a seized expander in one of my rear drums for long enough that eventually one of the rear brake cables has popped off at the inner end, where it joins the front cable.
A couple of hours today has seen new shoes, pads and discs fitted, but how on earth do I get to the cable to re-attach it? Is it under the rear carpet, or is it under the back of the centre console?
Does anybody have a diagram or photo of the offending article or possibly a screen grab from VIDA?
Many thanks.

Hi,

I recall someone posting on here with a similar problem when replacing both rear cables from the yoke joint behind the centre console, do a search for it.

I seem to remember it was a sod of a job to do, second row seats needed to come out, carpets out and a lot of pain!

Let us all know how you get on.

Did this job last weekend and it needs to be a two person job to make life easier.

When you unhook the cable from the splitter under the centre console attach some cable to it (I used some metal garden cable that's covered in green plastic). From underneath the car pull the parking brake cable out of the car and it will pull your cable with it. Attach your cable to the new parking brake cable and pull back into the car. This is where I found two people was useful to pull the cables back and forth if they catch on anything. The main problem I had was getting the grommets into the bodywork to seal the holes.

No need to remove the seats or carpet only the centre console and that's held in with 4 screws.

When I did my S60 recently, the cable had a rubber grommet which sits each side of the body at the entry/exit point to the car from outside and the carpet needed to be lifted to ensure this grommet sits correctly as it doesn't just "fall" into the correct position on its own when installing.

I'd be surprised if the XC90 didn't have a similar weatherproofing measure.
