Default Delayed oomph

As I have said, this car is fairly new to me but I have noticed something and I don't know if it is normal.
I am for example waiting at a roundabout. Traffic is busy but a gap comes.
I put my foot on the loud pedal to make the gap. The car creeps forwards and after about a second or two, it realises I want to go and whoosh, off we go!
I am fairly new to automatics so I ask, Is that normal? If not, What's wrong?

Don't stamp the foot. Squeeze it slowly until the transmission engages car moves and then squeeze it faster.

It's a characteristic of the transmission.

We call that a Level 8 problem.

A second or two is a very long time for a delay in the transmission. I don't know if your auto box is that different to mine which is a 2012 XC70 but I certainly didn't have any such delay and having only driven auto boxes for the last 40 years, haven't never noticed such a delay in the transmission systems I have had. It is true that I now have the Polestar uprate on my Volvo and that provides a lot more urgency to take off and acceleration but even before having it fitted I never felt the sort of delay you describe. Are you sure this isn't an injection or turbo fault?

"Are you sure this isn't an injection or turbo fault? "

I'm not sure of anything, I'm on, what is for me, pretty new driving ground.
What and where should I be looking?

Whats the service history ? Main Dealer ? or not.....
If not then there might be a few software updates for your car...might help might not......

Main Dealer prices do vary so shop around......

A service at the main dealers includes all software updates and Volvo Assistance for a year.....so not bad when you look at the whole picture.
You could also ask for a diagnostics check whilst it's there and perhaps haggle that for free....worth a go.

I nearly bought a 2008 V70 D5 SE Lux Geartronic from a dealership that exhibited this delay. My current 64-reg V70 also does it to some extent.

Frustrating and also annoying when it’s probably been programmed in so that the owner will spend some money on a Polestar upgrade to fix it.

I rented a Mercedes E220 CDi auto in 2008 that also did the same.

As for the XC90, the only one that I’ve driven (an early D5 Geartronic) had such a short first gear that you’d never notice a delay even if it occurred.

Mine has always done it too, since I bought on 130k miles anyway. It does feel like a second or two, but in reality only a split second, but that's enough to feel significant.

Mine does not do this......

I had a car that did and that was manual, 08 Laguna 2.0 DCI, that was dangerous to any driving it that was not aware, I learnt to give it more revs than normal.
