Default 940 Service

Right it's about time I gave the 940 at least a fluid and filter service......

Planned for this weekend, so any recommendations on oil and spark plugs especially?

I'm thinking of Halfords 10/40 semi synthetic oil (£23.99) and Champion Eon6 plugs (£21.49). I am on a budget for this, although I don't want to resort to Tesco "special" oil (£12 btw!!), but don't go suggesting Castrol all singing and dancing run a formula 1 car with bells on oil, cos I can't afford it!!

I am a bit lost on the plugs - I think Bosch WR7D's are specified - is there a big difference?

Sensible suggestions for alternatives welcome, however!

Thanks in advance
Graeme

For many years I have been using Castrol High Milage 10w40 oil bought from Costco for about £13 for 4 litres. Never had any problems with this.
I always use a Volvo oil filter though.

For plugs I have used Bosch super 4 plugs which lasted for ages but next time I will try NGK BPR6ES (about £10 for 4) for a change (the majority of Turbobrickers seem to prefer these). These are the standard copper plugs and from what I've read the more expensive platinum versions etc. are no better.

Yep. Always use these, and never had a problem, so don't spend more because you won't get any benefit. I get mine from GSF for about £9.00. Replaced them last week.

Same with oil. I use Duckhams 15/40 bog standard, usually with a Fram, Champion or Volvo filter. Avoid nasty cheap imported oil filters.

And if your air filter hasn't been out for a while it can make a big difference.

Enjoy the servicing. I always do. It's a labour of love!

Thanks oily, yes doing air filter as well.

I am looking forward to it, it's years since I've got my hands properly dirty, (my cheapo cars usually get scrapped or sold on when the tax runs out!), but this 940 is a keeper so I best get stuck in.

I'm starting with this service and working up to full brake overhaul and cambelt change when time and cash allow!

Graeme.

NGK BPR6ES plugs, go to your local motor factor and get a Mann filter (MAnn make volvo's OE filters), and 4 litres of their own-brand semi-synthetic 10w40 oil. If it's eurocarparts it'll be comma oil, which is actually rather good for the price. An air filter is an air filter so grab whatever brand they have.

Castrol is a huge ripoff IMO, it's all in the marketing and hasn't been a top-line oil in terms of quality for years now. I especially dislike the way they market their low-end oils (magnatec, high mileage) with 'synthetic engineering' on the bottle. while it's a good weasely phrase, it can't get round the fact it's plain mineral oil sold at a huge markup!

It's also worth considering when coolant/brake fluid/gearbox oil/diff oil were last changed, they're often neglected. Replace the fuel filter if it's old-looking, tey always seem to get forgotten and the black muck that comes out of them tells its own story! Check the accessory belts for wear/cracking, they're cheap and drop you in a heap of trouble if one snaps miles from home

Thank you every one. I went for that 60000+ Mile oil, and the NGK plugs. Air Filter from Volvo tiny shock at over £16 (!) but saved elsewhere so all done for £65.78. Purring like a kitten.

I'll relax for another year.......

Whilst you're doing the service, clean out the PCV system, it's not hard to get at and i would guess that it's well blocked. Well mine was, despite the huge service history, i bought along with the car.
I would endorse a Mann filter, they are good and at around £3.00 they are cheap, the one you need is Mann 916/1
Good luck with your service, you will feel the difference in your car.
