740 vs 940 : Size matters!!!
Hi, can anyone tell me whether the estate versions have the same load carrying capacity? I seem to recall reading somewhere that 740's were larger than 940's....something to do with the rear wheels intruding more in a 940 estate (I think)
Thanks Colin |

Load Capacity "Looks" Identical to me
Hello
Have a 960Turbo (1991) and a 740 (1987) - (head gasket renewal in process - for too long) in my drive - now I have done no measurements - but capacity "looks" identical to me - not as good as our old 245 though! Both are great cars Regards Jim |

they are the same size, height, length, and width. The wheel arches are the same also, as the plastic load liner fit either.

Yep, the same. The 940 was a steady evolution (read facelift) of the 740. Most bodyshell changes occurred ahead of the A pillars.

Thanks for your help Colin |

Yes, almost! The owner's handbook gives the same rear seat up measurement for both 740 and 940, however the rear seat down length is 183cm in 740 and 194cm in 940. The tailgate aperture max height is 77cm for both but width of opening is 139cm on 740 and 146cm on 940. The xternal dimensions also show some small differences.

Hi Peter, I'm not questioning your figures, however I find it strange that the aperture figures differ between models when the tailgate is the same item?! Internal trim differences shouldn't affect the actual aperture measurement, only the loadbed width. I'm curious now!

ah-ha!
OK, just did some digging in the parts catalogues. It looks like the 740 and 940 tailgate is the same up to the 1995 model year - so I guess its the post 95 940 that has the wider aperture.
I feel better for knowing that

That figures, as I was reading from my 1996 MY handbook! Moral of this is to get a post 1995 945 if you want those few extra centimetres. Good bit of detective work there. Do you have a set of parts catalogues then? Could do with a copy for the registers and perhaps the model info pages (700/900/90) on the website.
All the best, Peter. |
