Default 1800e fuel injection problem

Hi,

I have an E that does not like to tickover smoothly, it slowly gets lumpier. If I pump the brakes the revs rise as though air build up is present. The plugs are sooted up as well. Vacuum hose when disconnected has there's build up again, connect it and the car runs smooth then gets lumpier again. Any ideas? Keith

yes the system is running too rich , you need to check the coolant temperature sensor is within specification. Most likely though the manifold pressure sensor will need "adjusting" . You need to drill a 6 mm hole through the centre of the big sealed adhuster screw on the end and use a small electrical screwdriver through the hole to adjust inside ... to get the

CO to about 2.5% on idle

Hmmm - Check the MPS hose holds a vacuum.
If you want to test this by swapping it out let me know.

Usually there is another cause than the MPS. IN your case, check if the brake booster doesn't cause an air leak.
The diaphragm inside the MPS can be faulty, just open it and inspect. If needed, drill out the 4 rivets.

Don't start drilling the set screw. It can be undone, after heating and scraping off the resin seal. All you want to know about the MPS is here: http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders...ure_sensor.htm

I adapted my MPS to my single carb engine, married with an E-head. The block still has the original (A?) cam. I used a Lambda sond to hopefully get it right.

Wow! Very detailed article, I will investigate further.

I meant to add that there are no other issues with the performance as the car pulls very well so is only in tick over mode that it has an obvious problem.

Thanks
Keith

If it is running rich it will go very well! I remember driving a mustard yellow 1800E which had suffered fuel in the sump which was common if the car was stopped and started a lot whilst on a car lot , had to sort that by adjusting the Air Pressure sensor and a check out with the EFIS Simulator , anyone remember that piece of kit? Anyway this car absolutly flew , i remember the speedo and rev counter off the scale on the end stops more than 135 bhp for sure, maybe the bores were nice and free !

You say its only on idle , does your ECU have a grey CO adjuster on it ?

i worked on these cars when they were new , the drilling of the screw was an official volvo mod , but if the big screw can be undone without drilling, all the better .

There is a large grey screw component on the side of the ecu opposite the cable entry

you should be able to affect the engine when turning this potentiometer , it adjusts CO ( mixture ) but only has an effect at idle .
