Default 66 steering wheel and engine

I want to fit an Astrali aftermarket steering wheel to my 1976 66 GL. The only boss available is for a 340 series. Will it fit ? I also want to improve the BHP and I am told that 340 series engines are compatible. Any ideas ?

The boss is usually made to fit the steering wheel which is held on by a central nut at the top of the steering shaft. When you remove the steering wheel you need to remove the boss to obtain access to the nut. Now if you mean the housing which fixes below the steering wheel then you will have to look at a 340 and make up your own mind about it. On perusing my Haynes manual and my DAF manual I can see no reason why a different make of steering wheel should not be fitted provided that the spline fitting is the same as Volvo and DAF.

Does your GL have an 1100 or 1300 Renault engine? If it has an 1100 then it is an easy matter to swap for a 1300. Mine is a 1300 and I have a spare 1100 engine as well. The 343, which is the most suitable, as it is made to fit CVT (belt drive) transmission, uses a 1400 engine which should also fit without too much persuasion. Some of the accessories may need to be changed about to fit correctly, but take your engine as a pattern.

I believe it is possible to fit larger bore cylinder liners (as these engines are wet-liner types) with larger bore pistons which with suitable adjustments to carburation should give a useful increase in power. According to Haynes the 1100 engine gives 47bhp, the 1300 gives 57bhp and the 1400 gives 70bhp.

Is yours a saloon or estate model? The estate has a hatchback and a third window in the side.

All the best, Peter

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply. Mine is the 66 GL saloon with the 1300 engine.

I have no idea how many there are around but other than mine I haven't seen any for a while.

I'm also hoping to fit alloy wheels but I'm struggling to find a supplier. Any ideas ?

If you have any contacts for spares I'd be grateful.

Thanks for your help.

Tim

You should have a reply concerning your possible purchase of Alloys in your own in-box.

All the best, Peter
