Would it be ok to post a guide here with instructions to install VADIS, or not? I am aware that it is a sensitive topic for some people here and that is why I am asking.

Who do I need to ask?

Vadis is obsolete anyway, current replacement is Vida. So I don't think there should be (hope not) any legal conflicts with it. (?)

I know but still........... I don't want to do something that some may consider to be wrong and strictly speaking it is still copyrighted material. I agree with you and I hope it is fine to post it. I just don't want to get a warning or even worse getting kicked from the forum for trying to be helpful

VADIS is the acronym for Volvo Aftersale Diagnostic and Information System. It is the old software Volvo used to use for the maintance of the cars. It was and is used to communicate with your car. The main feature that a lot of us here enjoy, is the fact that it gives detailed guides of how to do everything in your car. A 100 times better Haynes manual in other words. Google "Volvo Vadis" and you will find out more

I've been looking to get hold of a copy of this, to cover a 2002 V40, but having Windows 7 (64bit version) seems to mean I have to buy VIDA, which is 5 times more expensive! - unless anyone knows differently?

I am using Linux so Vadis or Vida would simply not work. In my case, I am using Virtualbox http://www.virtualbox.org/ , which is free. With Virtualbox, you can create a virtual environment where you can install Windows XP and then install Vadis in there.

Vida though can be installed in Windows 7 straight forward.
