Default Gearbox Whining and slipping out of 5th

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I've posted on here, but that's because I've had no problems of late. My problem is with the gearbox (renault JC5)

Anyway, 5th gear has started whining when my foot isn't on the accelerator. I've changed the oil, but it's persisting. Today, it jumped out of 5th gear as well when i hit 70 on the motorway.

Do I need a new gearbox? Or, is it this problem that i read on a renault forum:

"I've seen many posts of people having the fifth gear poping out on motorway etc. I'm not sure if this has been mentionned before (sorry if it has been...) but there is a simple fix to this problem.......but it has to be applied quickly. Don't drive the car and check this point first!!!!

To check this all you need to do is remove the 5th gear cover (3 nuts) on the left hand side of the gearbox (J- gearboxes).
The problem is often caused by the nut on the primary shaft of the gearbox that gets slowly unscrewed. First check if this nut is correctly tighten (torque should be 135Nm). Then check if the 5th gear pinion has play. If it has you need to replace it's needle bearing with a new bushing. All the parts come in a kit made by Renault (ref 77 01 472 396).

This can be replaced without gearbox removal so it's relatively cheap. But don't wait! If you hear whines in 5th gear or if the 5th pops out........CHECK THIS IMMEDIATELY!"

Any advice is greatly appreciated

go for it , i have dealt with 3 or 4 of these over the last 25 years just tightening the nut after adding loctite fixed it . but neglecting it will cause wear .

New gearbox?

Its only 5th that is often accessible without dismantling the gearbox completely.
