760T (B230ET) intercooler problem F plate
Open to good ideas here!
Garage at the end of road says the intercooler is blowing oily air. This should be impossible as the turbo was new less than 2 years ago and has almost no miles on, so the air blown by the turbo should be totally oil-free. Garage insists that the intercooler is leaking air! To be on the safe side I would change the intercooler - but certainly that year and for a bit after, the intercooler has the air connections at the top, not halfway down the sides as in the later B230FTs. And there are temperature sensors on the rad by the steering column and an atf or oil cooler by the battery, so swapping in a later intercooler is going to be tricky at best. The correct intercooler is NLA at Volvo. There is an aftermarket custom one that the website says will fit, but it won't on a 760T, IDK if it will on a prefacelift 740. On the 760T bonnet hits the intercooler and the intercooler cannot be dropped enough. And I know somebody else who wants one too. So if anyone can get two known good examples of the correct intercooler, I'd like them! Or a practical solution. It MIGHT be possible to use 940 bits and relocate the temperature senders to the bottom of the rad - but that means wiring. It might also mean a cone filter and maybe a dodgy bit of bent pipe. It MIGHT be possible to move the atf or oil cooler a bit, but then possibly the catch can becomes a problem. And I would not want to have to move the battery.

940 turbo non air con intercooler have the connections at the top, only a/c 940s have the connections half way down and the intercoolers are the same.
I have two 760 B230ET intercoolers lying around and I'm sure they are the same as the 940 ones which I also have several lying around. I will check later |

The crankcase ventilation system can tend to put oily air into the turbo inlet, it doesn't seperate oil that well. Check the turbo inlet pipe and maybe trying cleaning the PCV system.
+1 on the non-AC 940 intercooler with the ports at the top. AC in the middle. |
