My 'trusty steed' is at the menders, again. It was making some complaining noises, turned out to be rear brake caliper issues., seized on / binding etc. , faced with another repair bill on a 16yr old car with 140,000miles on it, is not my idea of luxury motoring. I am now, inevitably thinking it might be time to upgrade.
I love the V70's, had 2 now and have pretty much run them both into the ground. I am pretty sure i want to stick with the V70 models. but being an old fart with not a great deal of interest in cars generally I don't know where i should start looking. It seems the 2.4L D5's stopped in 2007, so i am now looking at the D4's but can only see 2.0L options. Ideally ( i think) I would like a V70 D5 2.4 Estate just like my 2005 one but newer, say around 5-6 yrs old or whatever i could get within my budget. any suggestions ?

2007 was about the end of P2 volvo V70. A p3 version continued from 2007 onwards in diesel and (limited) petrol versions. Until 2015 D5 (5 pot) were still available.but D4 2ltr 4 pots were the new option.
If u can run to D5 it's my choice. Manuals fewer than auto but I don't like auto...
Cheers Bob

I have a Dec 2014 D5 manual. It was one of the last 5 pot D5 made. Bought because I'd seem news about Volvo stopping production of 5 pots.
Xc70 might have soldiered on a few months longer than V70.
P3 V70 have 3 different D5 engines.
1 ) original D5 @ 185bhp
2) later D5 @ 205bhp
3) final D5 @ 215bhp
Think last two engines have twin turbo.
Cheers Bob

This is where it gets a tad bit confusing though. Not all D4's are 4 cylinder, the same applies for D3's... some are 5 cylinder engines, just with less power than the ones badged "D5".

Easiest way to check is to open the driver's door & read the sticker on the slam panel. That'll tell you the engine code & the brake horse power. Note, the D3's & D4's listed below are still 5 cylinder engines & they were used in V70's;

D3's (still 5 cylinder engines with a single turbo)

D5204T2 engine - used in cars 2011–2012 - 163bhp

D5204T7 engine - used in cars 2013–2016 (136 bhp)

D4 (5 cylinder with a single turbo)

D5244T17 engine - used in cars 2013–2016 (163 bhp)

D5's

185bhp - D5244T4 engine (single turbo)
205bhp - D5244T10 engine (twin turbo)
215bhp - D5244T11 engine (twin turbo)

KEV0607 that is one of the most informative and useful replies i have ever seen. I think this will really help me find the car i am looking for, which could easily have been overlooked as i would never have suspected a D4 to be a D5 in disguise.

You’re welcome. Remember, not ALL D3’s & D4’s have 5 cylinder engines (only the ones listed above).
