Are seats interchangeable?
I've a 2010 D5 XC90
With the part cloth and leather bolsters, unfortunately my interior seems to have had a hard life with various knocks and bruises with worn bolsters. My current seats are non electrically powered and not heated My question is are other seats plug and play? Could I upgrade to electrically powered ones? Perhaps heated too It seems if I were to go to the hassle of swapping them it'd be nice to upgrade to full leather, electric etc But don't know if the wiring and software is there? Any information would help Many thanks Matt |

I don't think a car with no electric seats or heated function from the factory will have any wiring for those functions, nor will it have the software. So even if you bought a new seats that had a heating pad/element and could move electronically, it would all have to be wired up properly (but you have no wiring). Or maybe there is wiring, but it would still have to be wired up, switches added to the dash to turn the heated seats on/off and all (electric movement and heated seats) would need to be programmed to work via software. Its a right faff really and it wouldn't be cheap. I think there's kits you can get for heated seats though, just generic kits (not actual Volvo seat heat pads). So if you got another set of seats, fit the generic heat pad and use that (needs wiring though and a switch fitting). As for the electric function, you may have to do without that. If wiring is there, its not just plug and play... it has to be programmed to the car, as it wasn't a feature on yours from the factory being a base model. Alternatively, find an car upholstery specialist that can restore the trim by fitting new bolsters. That's not cheap either. I watched a video recently where a Mercedes had a torn bolster on the driver's seat (leather), it cost £80 to fix. It didn't show how it was done, but there's people that do it. Maybe that's an easier option. If leather can be repaired, I think cloth seats can be too. Up to you really, but I don't really think its worth it. I'd see how much reupholstering costs first. If its too dear, find a used set of the same seats you have now in better condition and live without heated/electric. Its too much faffing and cost to get those functions you want working on a car that didn't have them from the outset. To be honest, you'd be far better off buying a car with the right spec to start with. I don't mean that in a harsh way, but its probably true.
