Default V40 stuck in 5th gear

So i started having a problem with my gearbox last week where it kept jumping out of 5th gear when i took pressure of the pedals.

Then when i was driving home a car pulled out in front of me and i let go of the pedals and put the brake on, this made a grinding noise i managed to put it in 5th gear but now i cant get it out of it.

Ive looked on the forum and it looks like i maybe a bit late for an easy fix.

Is it ruined or is it possible to fix something??

it is a 2001 1.9 petrol

thank you

Hmmm. i dont think i can offer you any useful advice as i have no idea what could be causing this.

can you get the car up on a ramp or on axle stands to get a look at the connecting rods?

also take the gator from around the gear stick off and have a look. it might be a penny has become lodged in the mechanism. these are only ideas as i have no clue with out seeing the car

If your reverse gear select is left and up with the lift up collar on the gear stick then you will have a Renault box fitted, the nut the holds the fifth gear carrier in place inside the box has a habit of undoing on this particular box resulting in jumping out of fifth when you take your foot off the gas pedal, if I were you i'd price up another gearbox to be on the safe side.

you can probably fix it by taking the end cover off the gearbox , the pressed steel cover , this will expose 5th gear and a loose retaining nut , you can dismantle 5th gear if something has jammed ... but usualy it is just the big nut come loose on the shaft .
