D5 sudden loss of power
Hi, I would be grateful for any advice regarding the sudden loss of power I experienced when driving on the motorway yesterday. My vehicle is a 2006 V70 D5 geartronic, 14,500 miles, full volvo service history. While driving at 70 mph the engine unexpectedly died, no warning lights came on and I coasted to a hault. Tank gauge showing 1/4 full. Tried to restart, engine turned over but would not fire. As I was in the middle of roadworks I was taken off the motorway by roadworks recovery truck. Phoned breakdown service, who arrived an hour later. I tried to start the car and it did not fire, then the breakdown chap jumped in and it started straight away, he ran the engine at fast idle for about a minute and everything was fine. The breakdown chap said that when I tried to start the engine it sounded like a fuel problem. Followed the recovery truck to the nearest garage (BP - I use Ultimate diesel) and filled the tank, 50 litres added, so plenty of fuel in the tank when it conked out. Car started again fine and drove home. I did experience the same problem about 18 months ago just after the low fuel warning light came on, at that time filled up and it started straight away, after leaving ignition on for 30 seconds the prime the system.
Thanks |

Might be that your fuel pump is wearing out...

The same thing happened to me two years ago with my 52 plate V70.
It was the fuel pump! This was after having all the injectors cleaned a visit to the Volvo dealers and two further cut outs on the motorway. I was told if the fuel pump does not provide enough pressure for the fuel the engine management will cut the engine. Scary when it happens at 70 miles per hour in the fast lane i can assure you |

loss of power engine cut out
I have just purchased a v70 d5 2.4 diesel se reg 2006 53000miles. Drove beuutifully for a week then without any warning what so ever it died approaching a roundabout - as if you had simply turned the engine off, no warning lights and electric apparently ok - car had to be pushed to roadside. several attempts at restarting failed, the engine turned over ok, but that was about it. left it five minutes and tried again. It sarted as if nothng was wrong and i continued my journey home without incident.
drove the car for a further week, nearly 250 miles under all driving conditions, motorway and around town without incident car running beautifully. One week later was driving down the motorway when it died without any warning in exactly the same manner - very frightning and potentially very dangerous. cruised to a holt on hard shoulder with it refusing to start again. Rac called when they came car started as if nothing wrong. Set off with the following - died again with the process repeated on way to volvo five times. rac lap top plugged in as i drove with the fault reacurring but didn't register anything on the rac software volvo found no faulty part with engine management code indicating a fuel pressure problem. they adjusted a thing or two with the fault code resetting and so indicating problem solved? Have now run the car for over a week without it happening yet? Although not convinced the problem is solved. This fault mirrors others in this thread, has anybody else had this problem and how was it cured? Was it the fuel pump as the above suggests? Last edited by sabbath2808; Oct 21st, 2009 at 20:46.
