Default D5 turbo resonator (pipe) replacement assy

So, the XC90 has started making massive air pressure noises/leaks under acceleration and have lost considerable power. It would appear the turbo pipe (resonator) is leaking.

How complicated is this to change? I can see that it’s not a flexible pipe but a large length of plastic. It would appear from initial looking about that it’s complicated and I have heard of people having to fill the sub-frame etc just to fit.

Has anyone undertaken this activity and what’s the complexity? I am a competent home mechanic however I don’t wish to start tilting engines/moving sun frames etc.

Thanks for any help guys.

Depends what is leaking, if its the orange seal in the middle, its a fairly easy change ... you only need to release from one end (I chose the front rather than the "up behind the engine box") ..... alt if removing completely, replace all the seals and check for splits in the plastic pipe its a PIA and you need very small hands .... some owners have replaced the charge pipe with a silicone version ... have a search on the forums, plenty of threads available.

hope it helps

I have just had mine changed at a Volvo indie it was £354 all in, if you buy a new one it is an upgrade so the ends are stronger I had my old one crack.

If it is leaking I would change it sooner rather than later as mine caused the dpf to block and broke down on the wife on the motorway.

Very straightforward and no need to touch subframe.

The silicone pipe is about £30.

The top hose clamp access is restricted but very much DIY ( you personally will eat this job )

You need to use a 3/8th inch thin socket extension with the correct size socket to fit onto the new top clamp at the turbo.

Put the car on ramps , slide under and look between the angle gear onto the turbo and you will see the clamp.

Access through that gap.

The bottom clamp access is totally un restricted.

My silicone hose has been on for 3 plus years now with no issues.

Worthwhile job.

Just had this go on mine, a big "psssssht" noise and then really down on power.
I've taken the undertray off and can see the orange seal pushed out and split.

Am I right in thinking it's as straight forward as get a new seal, undo hose clamp, replace and tighten?

It seems to be the seal where the charge pipe from the intercooler meets the resonator.

If its the one in the middle, I couldn't do it, I had to remove the front turbo end as well then change the seal, maybe others had better luck than me.

I have looked at mine and the orange seal was damaged. I managed to reseat it and it drove a lot better with more power and no notice left noise however 2m up the road the DPF full warning came on.

I wonder, if at the end of the DPF life the pressure required in order to expel gasses causes back pressure and hence the issue? The leaking starts and upon resolving it the DPF sensor comes on? I don’t know, it’s just a theory but it would appear plausible and possible?

I have now got mine going to a mechanic as I am fortunate to have a good one locally who doesn’t charge too much and given how much I have on at the moment (work seems to have really really started picking up of late which is good) and the fact I have access to other cars I will put it in the garage.

I will let you know the outcome.
