Fuel flap not latching shut
For the last few fill-ups the fuel filler flap has been very reluctant to latch shut when trying to close it. After about 20 tries each time it has finally latched but maybe won't next time! Is this something others have had and cured easily with a bit of lube or should I just carry some tape in case it won't shut and wait for the next visit to the dealers?

Had same problem on my 58 plate S80.
I note that the lock inside the recess to the left was stuck in an extended position preventing the flap to engage the lock. I pushed the extended latch in with the end of a key on my key ring and it poped back into place allowing the fuel filler flap to close properly. |

is the flap sprung loaded so it springs itself shut? its likely the plastic hinge is broken if not ...

You could try squirting some graphite powder into the hole in the body which the loop on the door goes into.

The problem seemed to be that there is a plastic square "pin" that must retract when you press the flap release botton on the dash. This pin needs to come back out again for the latching device on the flap itself to engage with when you close it but the pin was sticking in the "in" position so the flap catch had nothing to engage with. If you find yourself in the same position you can just about get a grip on the end as it stays sticking out by a few mm and help it come back out, or if its too far in to grip just wiggle it a bit and out it pops! My car had its 12,500 service yesterday at MRG. They said it is a known fault and there is a mod to fix it. They have done the mod so hopefully it won't be a problem any more.
